Gifts for Tall Men: 11 Things I Measured and Kept
If you are buying for a tall man, you already know how this usually goes. He opens it, he says thank you, and three weeks later it quietly goes back. It is not ingratitude. It is that tall on a label means almost nothing, and nobody prints the one measurement that decides it.
Everything on this page is something I bought, laid flat, taped and then kept, at six foot eight and 285 pounds. Each one carries the number that actually settles whether it fits, so you are not buying on a letter and a photograph.
Before you buy anything: take one measurement
This is the part that turns a guess into a decision, and it takes five minutes while he is out. Go to his wardrobe, find the thing he reaches for most and lay it flat. One measurement is enough to start. Take more and the search narrows; take one and you are already ahead of everyone shopping by size.
- Back length. Base of the collar straight down to the hem. This is the number that decides a shirt, a sweater or a coat, and almost no brand publishes it.
- Front rise. Top of the waistband down to the crotch seam. This is what decides trousers — not the inseam.
- Inseam. Crotch seam to the hem.
- Thigh, flat. Across the leg one inch below the crotch seam.
Put whatever you got into the Fit Finder and it returns every garment I have measured that matches within half an inch. Fill in one box or all four — the tool works with what you give it. You are no longer asking what size he is, which has no reliable answer. You are asking what else measures like the thing he already loves.

The safe bets under thirty dollars
If you want something that will almost certainly stay, start here. These are the three cheapest things I have kept, and two of them I have bought more than once.
Amazon Essentials slim-fit stretch jean — under $20
A genuine 36 inch inseam with a 11.75 inch front rise and a 17.25 inch back rise, which is the combination that keeps a waistband where it belongs when he sits down. Thigh 12 inches flat, leg opening 7.25. I have bought this pair twice, which is the most honest thing I can say about any garment. Check it on Amazon · my full measurements
Amazon Essentials stretch chino — under $25
A true 36 inch inseam, which is rarer than it sounds: most things labelled a 36 arrive at 33 or 34. Front rise 12 inches, thigh 12.5. One warning that will save you the return: it runs about two inches large, so order a size down from his usual waist. Check it on Amazon · my full measurements
Sevego tall jogger — under $30
Thirty-three inches from crotch seam to the bottom of the cuff, and a 4 inch cuff that stays at the ankle instead of climbing the shin. They are made in 31, 33, 35 and 37 inch inseams, so this is one of the few gifts where you can match his leg rather than hope. Check it on Amazon · my full measurements
For the one whose sleeves are always too short
Knitwear is where tall sizing fails most quietly. A jumper can fit across the chest and still finish two inches above the waistband, and the body length is the figure brands leave off.
Amazon Essentials crewneck sweater, 2XLT
Thirty-two inches down the back and a 26.5 inch sleeve from the shoulder seam, in 100 per cent cotton. The shoulder sits inside my window, which is why it stayed. Check it on Amazon · what to check on a tall sweater
Amazon Essentials hoodie, 2XLT
Thirty-one inches down the back, a 14 inch hood opening and a pouch pocket at 13 by 9.5 inches, which matters if he has long hands and is tired of pockets that only take fingertips. Check it on Amazon · my full measurements
For the one who trains
Compression is the category where tall men are quietly ignored, because the whole garment depends on length and almost nobody publishes it. These are the three brands I own and actually wear.
- SKINS, calf length. Front rise 12 inches, thigh 9 flat, 4 inch cuff. Check it on Amazon
- DFND ACTIVE, full length. Front rise 12.5 inches, thigh 7 flat, 4 inch cuff. Check it on Amazon
- CompressionZ three-quarter. Front rise 9.5 inches — lands mid-calf on a six foot eight leg, which is worth knowing before you buy it as a full-length tight. Check it on Amazon
My own note on the first two, written down in October: the SKINS and the DFND get used a lot, because the compression is genuinely good and for leg days or long walks they are essential. All four brands, measured
DFND SleepTec recovery sleepwear — the $65 to $75 tier
There is no tall size anywhere in this line, and the XXXL long sleeve still measures 33.5 inches down the back on me — longer than shirts that were actually sold to me as tall. The short sleeve is 31.5 and the pant is a 32 inch inseam. For a gift the useful part is that DFND give ninety days to decide, with exchanges and returns, which matters in a category nobody can try on first. See the long sleeve at DFND · my full measurements
If you are spending properly
Ariat M4 boot cut jean
Twelve and three quarter ounce ring-spun stretch denim, a 12.25 inch front rise and a 17.25 inch back rise, with a 9.75 inch leg opening that actually clears a boot. The inseam tapes at 35.5 rather than the 36 on the label, which is close enough that I kept them and said so. Check it on Amazon · do Ariat jeans run big?
Three coats that reach
I have measured fifteen coats for this site. The ones I kept all start at 34 inches down the back — below that and the hem sits on the belt no matter what the label says. These are the three that stayed.
- Dockers Weston wool blend walking coat, 3XLT. Thirty-six inches down the back, 26 inch sleeve, detachable scarf. The hem lands just below the seat and the cuff sits on the wrist bone. Check it on Amazon
- Legendary Whitetails waxed casual coat, 3XLT. Thirty-four down the back with a 29 inch sleeve, and the narrowest shoulder of any coat I have kept. Water-resistant waxed cotton with a quilted lining. Check it on Amazon
- Legendary Whitetails barn chore coat, 3XT. Thirty-four down the back and the roomiest thing I kept at 60 inches around the chest — the one to buy if he layers heavily. Check it on Amazon
How long a coat has to be, measured
What not to buy him
Said plainly, because it will save you more than the list above.
- Anything sold as tall with no published body length. A great many tall garments are the regular pattern with two inches added to the sleeve and nothing added to the body. If the brand will not print the back length, assume they did not change it.
- A coat shorter than 34 inches down the back. The shortest one I measured came in at 31 and finished above the belt.
- Socks. Not because they are a bad gift, but because no brand publishes calf height and I have not measured enough pairs to point you at one honestly. I would rather say that than invent a recommendation.
- Anything in his usual size from a brand he has not worn. Two garments with the same label can differ by three inches. His size is not a fact about him; it is a fact about one brand.
If you only do one thing
Measure the garment he wears most and put what you have into the Fit Finder. It is free, one number is enough, and it works for things that are not on this page. Everything here was measured by hand so that somebody buying a present does not have to guess.

Disclosure
Every measurement on this page is my own, taken by hand with a tape, on a garment I bought or was sent for review. Links to Amazon and to DFND are affiliate links and I earn a commission if you buy through them, at no cost to you. The DFND sleepwear was supplied free of charge for review, which makes it gifted under FTC rules, and it is listed here on the same terms as everything else: it stayed, and the numbers are published. Prices move constantly, so I give bands rather than figures — check the current price before you buy. Last checked 3 November 2026.
