Fleece vs Tech Fleece vs French Terry — Best Sweatpants for Tall Men

Sweatpants are the easiest thing in your wardrobe to get wrong at 6 foot 4. Not because good ones are expensive, but because the label tells you almost nothing about how the fabric will behave once there is an extra four inches of leg hanging off the same waistband.

Big and Tall is about girth, not length
This is the trap, and it catches everybody. Big and Tall sizing mostly adds width through the chest, waist and seat. It adds very little length.
- Amazon Essentials fleece sweatpant: 31 inch inseam on a size medium
- Champion Reverse Weave joggers: 30 inch inseam
- Under Armour and Nike Big and Tall: XLT and 2XBT style sizing, an inch or two of extra length at most
So you buy Tall, get an inch, and still land mid-shin. The word is not doing what you think it is doing. Buy against a number instead, and see the jogger inseam guide for which number you need.
The only decision that matters: does this pair need to hold a taper?
Every fabric below is good at something. The question is not which is best, it is what you are asking the trousers to do. A longer leg means more fabric hanging off the same waistband, and weight decides where it ends up.
- Sitting still, staying warm – go cotton. Terry or fleece.
- Moving, training, travelling – go synthetic. It holds its shape over the longer panel.

French terry: the transitional one
Looped on the inside rather than brushed, midweight, breathable, and it absorbs about 27 percent of its weight in water. This is the fabric for August through October and for layering under a quarter-zip.
The tall catch: on a long leg, a relaxed terry cut bags at the knee within a season. Buy tapered.
Where to buy the length: Sevego publishes 32, 34, 36 and 38 inch inseams in terry. Real Essentials three-packs are the cheapest way to test a length before committing.

Traditional brushed fleece: the warmest one
Same knit as terry, but the loops are sheared into a pile. Heavier, much warmer, far less breathable. Best worn alone in real cold rather than layered.
The tall catch: weight is the enemy of a long leg. Heavy fleece drags downward and pools in folds at the ankle, which is exactly where an inseam error shows up worst. Of all these fabrics, this is the one where getting the number right matters most.
Where to buy the length: Champion Powerblend and Russell Athletic Big and Tall are cheap, warm and everywhere, but check the inseam before you order. Sevego makes a fleece-lined winter jogger at a 34 inch inseam.
Performance poly fleece: the one to buy from Under Armour
Under Armour Armour Fleece is 100 percent polyester with built-in stretch. Light, warm, quick-drying, and it does not sag. If you are buying one pair from a name brand, this is the category where that brand genuinely earns it.
The tall catch: Under Armour sizes Big and Tall for width. Read the inseam on the specific style rather than trusting the T.
Cotton-poly blend: the pair you already own
Under Armour Rival Fleece is 80 percent cotton, 20 percent polyester, midweight, brushed inside. It is the mass-market default and it is genuinely fine. Softer than pure synthetic, warmer than terry, cheaper than tech fleece.
The tall catch: cotton content means it grows. Over a long panel, that shows as knee bag by month three.

Bonded tech fleece: the one that holds a taper
A foam core bonded between two jersey faces. Structured, warm for the weight, and it keeps a clean taper down a long leg where cotton would sag. The trade-off is breathability, and cheaper versions pill at the thigh inside a season.
Credit where it is due: Nike Tech Fleece is one of the few mainstream lines offering genuine Tall sizing rather than just Big, running S Tall through XXL Tall.
Search by measurement, not by the word tall
This one habit is worth more than any brand recommendation on this page. Searching tall returns whatever marketing chose to label that way. Searching a number returns what actually exists.
Try 36 inseam mens joggers or 38 inch inseam sweatpants. The results are different, and usually cheaper.
If you are over 6 foot 8
Talleaf goes to a 40 inch inseam, which is effectively the only mainstream answer above that height. American Tall, 2Tall and ForTheFit build properly for tall frames and adjust rise as well as length, and they are worth knowing about even though they are not the cheap option.
The short version
- Layering in shoulder season: french terry, tapered
- Cold, worn alone: brushed fleece, and get the inseam right
- Training or travel: performance poly or tech fleece
- Every one of them: add two inches to your normal inseam
None of this costs more. It is a question of reading the number instead of the label.
